The Science, The Philosophy and The Art
First the science, our brain controls and coordinates all functions of our body. In order for our heart to pump sufficient amounts of blood, our liver to filter toxins, our kidneys to regulate fluid balance, our pancreas to regulate sugar balance, our muscles contract and relax, for us to feel and sense the environment around us. All controlled by our brain. The brain is able to do this because of its connection to the body through our nervous system; nothing goes on in our body without this communication. In order for us to live healthy lives this communication must be maintained. Our brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system; our peripheral nervous system consists of the nerves that exit the cord and travel to all parts in the body. The skull protects our brain; vertebrae that make up the spinal column protect the spinal cord.
Second the Philosophy, its is the fundamental belief in Chiropractic that the vertebrae that protect the spinal cord can, either through trauma or over time move out of their normal position and put pressure on spinal nerves. As vertebrae that moves out of its normal position and interferes with nerve transmission is called a spinal subluxation. Interference with the nerve transmission creates function loss, function loss over long periods of time creates a situation in which the body can no longer react and respond to the environment and our body performs less efficiently. For example, how our body responds to stressful situations whether it be emotional or physical, our response to viruses and bacteria, and how well we respond and heal from traumas. Basically how well we can adapt to the environment around us.
Third the Art, is the way Chiropractors care for their patients. Treatment is called an adjustment, it is a force applied to the spine to correct spinal subluxations. How a Chiropractor utilizes the tools available be it x-rays, examine, history findings, and delivers the adjustment, the overall care for his or her patient is the art of chiropractic.
